Chapter 13

When the phone rang a little after six the next morning, I shot up from the bed, my broken leg temporarily forgotten—but only for a moment. I grabbed the receiver as I wrestled the sheet from my cast.

“Mama?” Andi’s voice was small and quiet on the other end of the phone.

“What is it, honey?” Please, God, please have Jared be all right.

“W-we got a c-call. They’re w-wanting the families of Jared’s unit to meet at the armory at eight this m-morning.”

“I’ll be ready—”

“N-no, Mama. Just me. Wives, you know. Of course, there’s Jim Ingles because Sandi’s in the unit.” She cleared her throat. “Spouses, then. Anyway, there was no explanation. I—I don’t know—”

“Baby—”

“I—I don’t even know if Jared’s okay,” she said in a single breath, gulping afterward as though starved for air.

“He’s fine, Andi. He’s—”

“Mama, please, no platitudes, no words of comfort. Just pray, okay? And... and don’t tell Seth when I bring him over. You and Aunt Jane have to act normal. That’s important. I don’t want Seth to be afraid for his daddy.”

I wished I could be there with her, to hold her and give her the comfort she claimed she didn’t want but really needed. Despite the hesitation, the fear reflected in her voice, there was also a sense of resolve and determination.

“We’ll be here,” I assured her.

Andi signed off with a simple good-bye that spoke volumes to anyone who knew her. She would prepare herself for the worst while praying for the best, turning it over to God to see her through. A faith that could move mountains.

I dragged myself out of bed and plopped into the wheelchair. Five more days and this thing would be history. Five more days and I would be able to bend my leg, wear regular

clothing, and return to normal.

Well, as close to normal as I could be.

Jane was already in the kitchen, bustling around and putting away dishes that had been in the dishwasher. She had something cooking on the stove, probably one of the western omelets that she liked so much.

“Morning,” she said as I wheeled to the refrigerator. “Who was on the phone?”

“Andi.” I told her about the meeting. “She’ll be bringing Seth over soon.”

“Not a problem. I’m sure everything’s fine, just some sort of update. After all, Jared told her their mission was hush-hush.”

True, that’s what he’d said. Still...

“What’s that you’re wearing?” I looked down and fingered the brushed cotton. “Just an old shirt.” I grabbed orange juice from the fridge and rolled over to the sink for a glass.

“Not just any old shirt,” Jane persisted. “That’s one of Ike’s, isn’t it?”

I poured half a glass of juice and topped it off with water—loved the orange juice but between the calories and the acid, diluting it worked best for me.

“I’ve thought about going to Linda’s for a cut and style. You think she might be able to work me in today?”

Jane blocked my path to the table. “You haven’t been to a stylist since Ike died.”
